The lack of financial literacy is an economic and public health crisis because being financially literate is essential to improving Americans' standard of living and reducing income inequality. It impacts the average consumer credit score—which influences not only one's ability to obtain loans and credit cards but also someone's ability to purchase or rent a home and even the type of employment one may get.
Fifty percent of American adults are anxious about personal finances. Not knowing basic financial literacy topics such as economics, interest rates, loans, investments, and long-term financial planning hinders economic opportunity and mobility. Additionally, 67% lack the knowledge to make sound financial decisions, and 1 in 3 consumers take a hardship loan from their 401(k) annually.
As we emerge from the pandemic and face historic inflation levels, people across Wisconsin are experiencing high levels of financial stress and burnout, impacting various aspects of their lives and our economy in general. That's why ELEVATE Wisconsin® was created to help bridge the financial literacy gap across the state.
Since 2009, our program sponsors have collaborated on grant-funded projects to help improve overall financial wellness. Through this collaboration, our financial education programs have received the Wisconsin Governor's Award for Financial Literacy four times.
